In this example, the machine is square, and the operating position is facing the carriage. So the carriage is X and the gantry is Y.
The machine origin will be at near left, and the machine will home to far left where the limits are.
If you have a rectangular machine and want the gantry to be X it will be better to get it working as described, and then change the axis orientation later.
As mentioned, I moved the wire harness support and exit point to the far right, this image shows it at near left.
